Gandhinagar is the capital city of Gujrat since 1970, also known as the Garden city for its lush greenery. It is named after Mahatma Gandhi and also has some tourist destinations based on Gandhian-era which also have historical significance. The city is very well planned and lies on the western banks of Sabarmati river. Gandhinagar has seen rapid growth and development in the eighties. The administrative center is slowly turning into a trade center and the efforts of establishing Industries near Gandhinagar has changed the face of the town.
Gandhinagar has located 25 Kms away from the earlier capital of Gujrat, Ahmedabad. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is serving as the common airport for both the cities, i.e. Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. It is located 900 Kms from the New Delhi and one can easily get Gujrat tourism buses, flights, trains, and private cabs, functional almost every day.
Best time to visit Gandhinagar
- October to march: It is the time when winter sets in temperature lie in the range of 30’C to 10’C. Winters are pleasant in this part of the country so this time is considered best for sightseeing.
- March to may: This part receives scorching heat and temperature lies in the range of 40’C to 20’C. Hotels in Gandhinagar offer a good discount, flights too are cheaper and the city is less crowded.
- June to September: Gandhinagar prepares for the monsoon after showers city appears beautiful as it is lush green, thus making it worth visiting during this time. Temperature is in the range of 35’C to 15’C.

Swaminarayan Akshardham Ashram
A beautiful Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan spread over the area of 23 acres is the most famous among places of interest in Gandhinagar. Built using 6000 tones of pink Rajasthani sandstone and four other types of stones, this temple comprises 93 intricately carved pillars and 40 exquisitely-designed windows. Water laser show during the evening is not to be missed experience, it happens every day at 7 PM. Temple is open from 09:30 AM to 07:30 PM.
Dandi Kutir
It is India’s largest and only museum build on the teachings and idea of one man i.e. Mahatma Gandhi. This museum showcases struggle of the people of India, by breaking the salt law, a step towards Poorna Swaraj. It is equipped with sophisticated electronics equipment in which audio-video and 3D visual, 360-degree shows and display is used to show varied knowledge and progress of different Independence movements. It is at a distance of 3km from Vidhan Sabha. Museum remains closed on Monday and photography is prohibited, Time to visit is 10.30 AM to 5.00 PM.
Indroda Nature Park
It is Also known as Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil park, spread on the area of 400 hectares and is located on the bank of river Sabarmati. It is the only park with Dinosaur skeletons in India and is the second largest hatchery of dinosaur eggs in the world. This natural park is divided into various sections based on the flora and fauna, namely fossils, mammals, reptiles, and marines. Kids love this place because they are able to witness varied species of animals. One can visit this place for morning walks as well. Park is closed on Monday, on rest of the day timings are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Adalaj Stepwell
A four level well, which is now dry was built by Queen Rudabai in 1499. The purpose of this well was to provide shelter to the weary travelers and pilgrims going from the route, villagers also used this step well for hundreds of year to fetch fresh water. The inside part of this well is cooler than the normal city temperature, hence can be visited to take a break from scorching heat and repose in coolness. It is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM everyday.
Blackbuck National Park
Established in 1976, this park is the breeding place for endangered Blackbuck and also a major tourist attraction of Gujrat. It is 150Kms away from Gandhinagar located in Bhavnagar district, spread in the area of 34 sq.km. This park is paradise for bird watchers and apart from birds, one can spot neelgai, wolf, jackal, Indian fox, wild boar, porcupine, hare and rodent at this popular tourist spot. One can witness these animals roaming freely when going on a safari. Good walking shoes, torch, binoculars, and a camera are highly recommended. A jacket or a pullover is a must in winters. Time to visit Blackbuck national park is 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM.
Gandhinagar being in connected to the Thar dessert and Rajasthan region attracts lots of foreign as well as Indian travelers. It is a good place to take a break and explore the western part of the country.
