Leh the former capital of the kingdom of Ladakh is now a dream destination of many and the Mecca of happening enthusiasts! Leh, one of the coldest deserts in the world is located at an interval of 434 Kms from Srinagar and 474 Kms from Manali (Himachal Pradesh). As Leh city is located at a high altitude of 3500 meters above sea level. Some people may feel high altitude sickness on the day of arrival to Leh. Therefore it is highly recommended to follow some of the essential tips to avoid high altitude sickness. Avoid traveling to long distance remain in your hotel in Leh and take a complete rest on the day of arrival. It is suggested to have a walk up to Shanti Stupa/Gompa village to gain height and then back to the hotel to a bit lower altitude to sleep. Day by day greenery is increasing in Leh valley which increases the levels of oxygen in the atmosphere.

ESSENTIAL THINGS TO CARRY

  • Warmer:  Self-heating pouch which provides heating for eight hours continuously, without any external source of heating.
  • Water: Water is an essential thing while traveling to Ladakh since dehydration can lead to severe health issues. So make sure to carry a couple of liters of water per person all the time at drink at regular intervals.
  • Medicines: Carry Diamox if you are not allergic to sulfur drugs, it helps to reduce some symptoms of acute mountain sickness and medicines for a headache, fever, stomach ache and cough syrup.
  • Sunscreen Lotions: UV rays at high altitude are quite damaging to the skin, so it is recommended to carry a good quality sunscreen.
  • UV Sun Glasses
  • Lip Balm: Dry and cold weather leads to dry and chapped lips, so make sure to carry lip balms.
  • Mustard Oil: Used as a moisturizer for skin, putting in hair and also to lubricate nostrils, which can become painful due to dry and cold winds of Ladakh.
  • Energy Supplements: Glucose, Chocolates, biscuits and nuts.
  • Documents and IDs: It is essential to one Government Issue ID and a couple of photocopies of it since it is required while applying for inner line permit and certain places to register at various check posts.
  • Torch or Headlamp: Not required if your mobile phone has one, but if it doesn’t, carry a small LED.
  • Other personal essentials: Paper soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and toilet paper. You can also carry various other toiletries which are required.
  • Accessories: Hiking Boots, Backpack (60-80 liters), winter clothing, are necessary for backpacking here.
